"40 Beauty Questions" TAG

It's been a while since I did a "tag" type blog post, so when I saw this one on Hildegard's blog, Suzy Q-Tip, I thought I would join in :)

How many times do you wash your face daily?
Twice. In the mornings, it’s normally just micellar water. In the evenings, I double cleanse, and use an oil-based cleanser.

What skin type do you have?
Combination: dry bits, oily bits, sensitive bits, you name it!

What is your current facial wash?
At the moment I’m mostly using Bioderma’s Sensibio Micellar Water, together with The Body Shop’s Sumptuous Cleansing Butter. I recently got REN's Hot Cloth Cleanser, so I'm looking forward to giving it a try!

Do you exfoliate? What brand do you use?
Yes. I use a warm facecloth when removing any oil-based cleanser, using small circular motions to gently exfoliate. I also use REN’s Glycolactic Radiance Renewal Mask once or twice a month.

What moisturiser do you use?
At the moment I’m using Nivea’s Cellular Anti-Age moisturizers.

Do you have freckles?
Yes, but they’re not as nice and defined as when I was younger.

Do you use eye cream?
Not anymore, I don’t feel like it’s worth it.

Do you or did you have acne prone skin?
Yes, I was on Roaccutane for YEARS to clear up my skin. Now it’s A LOT better (miracle drug!) but I still get hormone-related breakouts.

Cleansing tip?
Switching from a foaming face wash to oil cleansing was an amazing change for me! Having a background of acne-prone skin, I never would have thought that oil cleansing would work for me! Instead, by stopping using harsh cleansers/toners and switching to moisturising clean oils, I was no longer stripping my skin dry, so it didn’t need to “over react” by producing excessive amounts of oil.

What foundation do you use?
This past summer, I stuck to BB/CC creams, with my favourites being the Garnier BB Cream for Combo Skin, the Catrice BB Cream and the Bourjois CC Cream (all in light). However, now that winter is approaching and I’m getting paler, all three of those are too dark for me, so I’ve switched back to foundation which I can get a better colour-match with. I have several, but at the moment I am loving the Rimmel Match Perfection Foundation (in Ivory).

How about concealer?
I’m using L.A. Girl Pro Concealer under my eyes, and Catrice Camoflague Cream on blemishes.

Do you know your undertone colour?
Yes, I have pink (cool) undertones.

What do you think of fake eyelashes?
I only use them for special occasions or dress up parties. Luckily my natural lashes are quite long, so I only use false lashes when I want extra volume.

Did you know that you are supposed to change your mascara every 3 months?
Yes, but I take expiry dates with a pinch of salt. I treat my products rather well, so I mostly use them until I detect that the formulation is starting to change, which is the point when I chuck them out.

What brand of mascara do you use?
I’m currently loving L’Oreal False Lash Wings.

Make up item that you can't seem to get enough of?
Lipstick! I’m a total addict.

Do you have a MAC Pro-card?
No, I actually haven’t bought anything from MAC before. (Shock, horror!)

What makeup tools do you use in makeup application?
Brushes. One exception, I’m currently applying my foundation with my fingers, and then going in with a buffing brush to blend it in. This avoids the brush soaking up too much product, and I find this gives a more natural finish.

What are your favourite brushes?
My favourites are all Real Techniques brushes, in particular the Expert Face Brush, the Buffing Brush and the eyeshadow brushes from the Starter Set.

Do you use primer for the eyes?
Only when I’m going out at night and want my eyeshadow to last even on a hot, sweaty dancefloor.

For the face?
Usually, unless I am in a rush.

What is your favourite eye shadow shade?
To be a cliché, I absolutely love Kitten by Stila. I also love coppery shades, as I feel they complement my blue eyes well.

Do you use pencil or liquid eyeliner?
Yes. I use a pencil liner on my top and bottom waterlines for everyday wear. I don’t include liquid liner in my normal everyday look, but do enjoy using it when I have the time.

What do you think of pigment eyeshadows?
Some of them are truly gorgeous, but they’re too much effort for every day.

Do you use mineral makeup?

What is your favourite lipstick?
Oh God, how to choose? At the moment, my three faves are all Wet n Wild MegaLast lipsticks: Mauve Outta Here, Stoplight Red and Sugar Plum Fairy.

How about lipgloss?
I tend not to wear lipgloss, it just gets my hair stuck in it and then wears off too quickly

What is your favourite blush to use?
At the moment I’m using Estee Lauder Silky Powder Blush in Pink Kiss and Nude Rose

Where do you buy your makeup online?
From Rubybox, Takealot, RetailBox or Zando

Do you like drugstore makeup?

Your favourite in SA?
My favourites are Essence, Catrice, Wet N Wild and L’Oreal

Did you ever consider taking makeup classes?
No, its not something I think I would ever do. I do enjoy watching YouTube tutorials every now and then though.

Are you clumsy in putting on makeup?
No. (In fact, thanks to load shedding, I’ve discovered I can even do a pretty damn decent job in the dark with a single candle!)

Name a makeup crime that you hate?
Foundation that’s too dark and/or too thick

Worst general-beauty crime?
Not wearing sunscreen! People, take care of your skin! Even if your skin type doesn’t burn, you should be wearing SPF EVERY DAY to protect your skin from UV damage that will lead to cancer (and ageing).

Do you like colourful shades of makeup (lipstick, eyeshadow) or neutral ones?
I tend to use neutral shades on the eyes and go crazy with the lips: bright and bold pink, red, purple or orange are all game for my daily face, and I’ve been known to go blue for lips (and eyebrows!) just for fun!

Which celebrity always has great makeup?
Taylor Swift

If you could leave the house using just ONE makeup item, what would you use?
Bold lipstick

Could you ever leave the house without any makeup on?
I prefer not to, it’s just not my style.

Do you think you look good even without any makeup on?
I look ok, but I love using makeup to enhance my features

What do you think of makeup in general?
I used to be someone who, thanks to horrible acne amongst other things, absolutely hated the way I look. Now, I’m happy with my appearance, and makeup has a great deal to do with that. Thanks to makeup, I can hide blemishes or undereye circles (even if they don’t look bad to other people – I can hide the flaws I think I have to look better to myself). At the same time, I can draw attention to things I like about my appearance, for example, my eyes.
Makeup helps women (and men!) improve their self-confidence. It helps us put forward the face we want others to see. It gives us freedom to express ourselves.

The Creative Colouring Book For Adults

About a month ago, I wrote a blog post about colouring in for adults (you can read it here if you haven't seen it yet). At the end of that post, I mentioned that I had just bought the "Kreatiewe Inkleurboek vir Grootmense" (Creative Colouring Book for Adults).

This book has a nice mixture of geometric and graphic designs, and has both really simple and really intricate pages. The paper is nice and thick, I've only noticed a little bit of colour showing through when using kokis. The designs are printed back-to-back, which is the only things I'm not a fan of (I would prefer single-sided).

Here are a few of the pages I've been working on recently. I'm still loving the bright, bold colours of kokis, but will be playing around with pencil crayons next.

And here are a few more pages to give you an idea of what the book is like. (You can click on an image to enlarge it.)

So - what are your thoughts on colouring-in for adults? Are you also hooked on this stress-relieving activity or do you not understand the hype?

Project Pan 1 - 10

If you've been around the blog world for a while, you probably have come across a Project Pan series or two before. For those who don't know what Project Pan is, this is what it is about: basically, you go on a no-buy or low-buy until you use up the things you already have. I'm sure everyone has experienced that point where your bathroom or vanity is overfull of half-empty products, and yet you keep on buying more. The idea behind Project Pan is to (a) finish using the products you already own (or, if you hate them, throw them out!) and (b) not buy products that you already have. So I will be repurchasing things I finish, or buying things that I still need, but no more wasting money on things I already have in my collection. Bonus: who doesn't find empties posts deeply satisfying on some level?

Here are the first 10 items on my Project Pan. (Some of these I had already repurchased before I started thinking about doing a Project Pan, but future installments of this series won't necessarily have this many repurchases.)

1.  REN Glycolactic Radiance Renewal Mask
A cult favourite, this mask helps remove dead, dull skin to reveal a more radiant you. I absolutely LOVE this product - it's expensive but so so so worth it! Bonus, the airtight pump packaging means that not only does your product not oxidise, but you also get every single drop out!
Will I repurchase? Yes - I bought a new one the week mine finished.

2. Bioderma Sensibio Micellar Water
My review of this product can be found here.
Will I repurchase? Yes - this is one product that I will keep in my skincare routine.

3. Batiste Dry Shampoo in Tropical
Now that my hair is long, it's far too much effort to wash it every day. Dry shampoo is fantastic for helping get an extra day of clean hair, and is also great for adding volume to freshly washed hair. The Bastiste dry shampoos, in my experience, are the best in their price range of those readily available in South Africa. I love the coconutty scent of this one - immediately makes me think of summer!
Will I repurchase? Yes, but only one at a time, no more buying every scent of the shelf at once.

4. Rain Biologie Manketti and Star Flower Body Scrub*
I loved this soft scrub - plus the scent is amazing and the oils are lovely and moisturizing. I tend to get keratosis pilaris on my upper arms and I find using a body scrub twice a week helps keep my skin smooth.
Will I repurchase? Yes, but only once I have finished using the remaining scrubs in my collection.

5. The Body Shop Almond Shower Gel
Who hasn't got a TBS shower gel or three at home? This almond-scented goodie had a lovely smell and lathered just enough to work without drying out my skin.
Will I repurchase? Yes, but only once I have finished using the remaining products in my collection.

6. Hey Gorgeous Chai Latte Body Scrub*
Another great smelling body scrub! (Hey Gorgeous has a wide variety of edible-sounding body scrubs.) This one was nice and exfoliating, although it wasn't quite as moisturizing as the Rain one.
Will I repurchase? Probably not, I personally preferred the Rain scrub.

7. Garnier Ambre Solair Facial Sunscreen SPF 50+
This sunscreen has great protection against both UVA and UVB. I used it throughout the summer. My only criticism is that it is a little heavy/greasy, so it didn't play well with makeup on really hot days. (But hey, on hot days, who wants to wear a full face?) It did seem to hold up quite well on pool days though without need for frequent reapplication, I didn't burn my face once this summer (despite the fact that my skin tends to burn if I even think of going in the sun.
Will I repurchase? Maybe. I'll be using a different sunscreen for the winter, but will consider repurchasing this one when summer comes around again.

8. Nivea Cellular Anti-Age Night Cream
My review of this product can be found here.
Will I repurchase? Yes, I actually already have another tub of this night cream that lives in my overnight bag.

9. Avon Youth Minerals Day Cream
A rather average day cream. Does the job but nothing out of the ordinary.
Will I repurchase? No, I'd rather just grab a Nivea moisturizer in Clicks that go to the effort of getting this one from Avon.

10. Lush Karma Komba Solid Shampoo
No picture for this one, as I used it absolutely completely up and there is no packagaing to photograph. You can read my thoughts on this product here.
Will I repurchase? Yes, I did before it was even finished. But first to finish the rest of the shampoos in my shower before I consider repurchasing this one again!

Going over to the dark side with Style Bar!

(Not familiar with Style Bar? You can read my first review/experience over here!)

I finally have the dark chocolate hair I've been dreaming about for months! As you might have been aware, I was growing out my previous blonde hair for what felt like forever and, come March, I had finally reached the point of having long hair that was entirely natural and unbleached. I took that opportunity to experiment with the idea of going darker (something I'd been considering for ages, but didn't want to try while I still had bleach damage). Style Bar Stellenbosch did an amazing job, helping me go just two shades darker than my natural dark blonde as a transition into the brunette world. (If you missed my constant posting on social media, you can see that here!) 6 weeks later, I was ready to take the plunge - I was ready to go much darker! Besides, winter was coming! The timing was perfect ;)

This weekend I went to Style Bar in Tygervalley. I love going to Style Bar, there is just something so pampering about the elegant and glam interior, and of course the staff and stylists are all so nice!
After years of highlights and damaging bleach, the process of going dark was so pleasant! My hair felt so incredibly silky soft, smelt like almonds and can you believe how shiny it is?! My hair has never been so shiny and healthy-looking before, it's usually been on the dull side. Even now after two washes at home sans professional blowdry, it's still shiny!

Thank you Style Bar - I love my new hair!
