NOTD - L.O.L.

LOL - essence colour & go

This week, I pulled something out of my polish box that I thought would look happy and bright on my fingertips! Depending on the lighting, this polish can be even brighter than the above image (taken indoors). It's a lovely, bright lime green - the perfect balance between yellow and green.
(I just ignore the name, which just seems weird to me. I dunno, maybe it's just me, but "LOL" reminds me of over a decade ago - let's not count exactly how many years! - when I had just started high school and cellphones were still new and "text speak" made you uber cool and no-one over the age of 18 knew what LOL meant.)(Nowadays we're much less excited. lol.)

#CPTBloggerMeet

On Saturday 18 January I went to my first ever blogger meet-up: the Cape Town Bloggers Meet, or #CPTBloggerMeet as it was tagged on social media. Now, I'm a big introvert: I'm perfectly happy sitting in my room all alone. Going and meeting 30 women that I have interacted with online actually in person - it took some psyching up. Nevertheless, I've been trying to push myself to try new things, so when the initial tweets of a Cape Town blogger meet-up started circulating, I was immediately interested, and once the deets were finalized on Lauren's blog, I was in!

This event was held at Shelley's Gourmet Cafe - a lovely cafe in Kloof Street with beautiful decor perfect for lunch with the girls! It's an eclectic mix of pretty and delicate items with lots of glittery goodness! (I will admit, I had been there for brunch before one Saturday last year, but (a) we sat outside under the tree and (b) my hangover was starting to hit me so I hadn't really noticed how pretty it was).

The lunch was action packed. We had several speakers, including Fiona from Inspired Living, Dirna Grobbelaar from IVOhealth and Ronel from Rain Africa. We were also treated to an unbelievably good shoulder massage from the ladies of the Rain Spa.(Seriously, I've been meaning to get a massage since I finished my thesis, to get all the stress knots out. I finished my thesis last January).

In addition to the loaded goodie bags on our seats, there were also lots of prizes up for grabs, and every blogger went home with a little something extra. There was also a competition to see who could decorate their Tomy Takkies the best - of course, I had to decorate mine with chemistry doodles! What do you think?

Of course, one of the biggest decisions to be made was "what to wear?". This is what I ended up wearing. My blue bodycon dress is from Woolworths (get it here), my blazer is from Edgars (Petite range), my beaded necklace was a gift and my peacock feather earrings were DIY'ed. I decided against heels (too much walking to be done that day) and went with simple black ballet flats. The red lipstick I wore was this one.

I staggered out barely managing to carry everything. This is what I eventually unpacked (plus a whole bunch of vouchers and such that are now conveniently organised in the pocket file!). I'll be posting some reviews over the next few weeks once I've had a chance to get a-testing!

I just want to say thanks again to Lauren for organizing, to all the sponsors and to everyone who helped make the day so enjoyable! I loved getting to meet some of my favourite bloggers in person, and I met some new friends as well. I look forward to meeting you all again soon and getting to know you ladies better :)

Photos my own, except the photo of me, which is by Amina.

NOTD - Crazy Fancy Love

crazy fancy love - essence colour & go

I've had this polish for a while but I've really been using it a lot recently. Crazy Fancy Love is a duochrome - depending on the light, it changes from a yellow-gold to a rose-gold/copper. I struggled to get a photograph that accurately represents the colour. It's really pretty and is opaque in two coats. It has a lovely metallic (not frosty) finish and, while the brushstrokes are rather apparent in photos, you don't really notice them IRL.

Look, I wear polish in real life too :) Mostly so that my hands look pretty when I hold wine or food...

#100HappyDays

If you use social media, by now you've probably seen more than a few people using the hashtag #100HappyDays. If you don't yet know what this is about, you can check out the website 100happydays.com/ - basically, the idea is to focus on all the little things we have that make us happy, by daily capturing these things.

Now, I will admit that I'm not the happiest person all round. I'm not always the smiley person in my avatar over there. I get down/depressed a lot. I don't consider myself an optimist at all. So when I first saw this challenge floating around the interwebs, I kinda shrugged it off. But then I started thinking... maybe this was exactly what I needed. Something to help me focus on the good instead of the bad. Something to help me retrain my brain. I've been doing the challenge for two weeks now, and - while I pretty much feel the same as I usually do - the little reminder note on my desk has me keeping my eye out for something to take a photograph of for the day. Who knows, maybe I'll give up partway through. Maybe I'll carry on all the way to the end. Maybe I'll inject just a tad more smiles into my daily life.

In any case, if you are still reading after all that rambling, here are a few photos from the last two weeks. If you want to see more, you can follow me on Instagram (@laurajane0103 - the link is to the right with the rest of my social media links). Depending on the theme of the photo, I will be sharing of few of these on my facebook page and personal twitter account. You can also see all of my #100HappyDays photos by using the hashtag #Lauras100HappyDays.

Top row, left to right: Wine and tapas at the Waterfront on a beautiful Friday afternoon; a sexy Lush bath; celebratory glass of wine after my first psychologist appointment
Middle row, left to right: Planning out a spread in my new Project Life album; wearing a new red lipstick; impromptu ice-cream adventures on a hot day
Bottom row, left to right: My daily yummy & healthy breakfast; Tasting wine in Church Street at the Stellenbosch Street Soiree; Fun at häzz as I did my first interactive latte art

(Yes, only three glasses of wine in the first two weeks! Not too bad at all ;P )

Lush Review - Luxury Lush Pud

Luxury Lush Pud Bath Ballistic

As I mentioned in my Lush Haul Video, I'm going to be posting some mini-reviews of the products I bought. Now, I know, it's after Christmas, so the festive products aren't available at the moment unfortunately, so wherever possible, I will also link to a mainstream product that has the same scent. Nevertheless, seeing as I only got around to trying these after Christmas, I thought I would still share my thoughts.

First up is the Luxury Lush Pud bath ballistic. Images of this ballistic were all over the place over the festive season, because it is just adorable. Based on the image of a traditional Christmas pudding, this ballistic takes it up a notch by being a lovely purple colour with big multicolour polka dots all over (and not forgetting the sweet holly leaves on top).

This ballistic almost immediately turned the bath water a gorgeous dark magenta-burgundy colour. Once I had switched off the ceiling light and was in the gentle candlelight glow, it looked like I was in a bath of red wine (and you just know that that seems like my heaven!). The water felt silky soft, and my skin was left moisturized. Best of all was the scent - a lovely warm lavender that was rich, but never overpowering (and nothing at all like the old-fashioned lavender scents that your grandmother favoured).

I filmed a super short video clip of what happens when you drop the ballistic into the bath:

For the remainder of this year, I'm going to be picking up some of the Twilight bath ballistics, which share the same scent as the Luxury Lush Pud, and I'm definitely going to be keeping an eye out for when the Christmas goodies return!

PS In case you are wondering, this bath ballistic - while intensely dyeing the water - left me and my bath tub completely unstained.

NOTD - Purple Prettiness

essence: oh my glitter!
accent nail is sally hansen gem crush: be-jeweled

Yes, another essence polish ;) (I promise, I own others, but at R19.95 each with such a huge collection, I just can't resist buying essence polishes!)

Oh My Glitter is a pretty purple polish with very fine purple and pink shimmers, which I struggled to capture on camera. I really love this colour BUT unfortunately, the polish is very sheer and streaky. The above swatch is with three coats and in direct sunlight, I could still see sheer spots. Hmmn, maybe one for layering in the future.

I just had to pair this with an accent of the insanely shimmery "Be-Jeweled" Gem Crush polish from Sally Hansen (which I picked up on the Clicks sale) as the purple and pink tones matched flawlessly!

NOTD - Electric Blue

I'm absolutely loving this colour on my nails at the moment!

The main colour on show here is "Electric Blue" by Accessorize. It's a beautiful cobalt blue with plenty of shimmers. Unfortunately, it's a tad on the sheer/streaky side. I combat this by first painting on two coats of a similar hued polish (in this case, the old "Boy Next Door" polish from Essence) before painting a coat of "Electric Blue". I added to the shimmery goodness with a light coat of "Crystal Shimmer" (also Accessorize) - this is a clear polish with fine holo glitter and is perfect for adding an extra touch of awesome to any manicure.

Happy 2014!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

First blog post of 2014! What what!?

I was feeling lazy, so I decided to echo my 2013 New Year's mani (see over here).

"Hey Nude!" is the third and final of the Sparkle Sand Effect polishes currently available (please come out with more, Essence! these are amazeballs!). It's a beautiful, cool-toned light polish packed with silver sparklies and is gently textured. Two coats is sufficient for opacity. This polish has decent staying power (at least over my base coat).
