24 before 25!

So, when I turned 24 last year, I decided to make a list of goals: 24 things I would like to do before my 25th birthday.

The list!
  1. Fly in an airplane for the FIRST TIME!
  2. Get my learner's license
  3. Start a YouTube channel
  4. Start yoga
  5. Sleep under the stars
  6. Attend a colour festival
  7. Write a letter to my 30-year-old self
  8. Take more photos of my daily life
  9. Buy myself a proper piece of jewelry
  10. Make some non-chemistry-related money
  11. Buy a pair of jeans that fit well
  12. Go 24 hours media free
  13. Go up onto the roof
  14. Clear my wardrobe
  15. Survive my first year of PhD life
  16. Go to a big music concert
  17. Cut my own hair
  18. Go watch a live comedy show
  19. Get business cards printed
  20. Visit a new province
  21. Host a themed dinner party
  22. Go for a weekend away with my friends
  23. Start journaling again
  24. Go to a blogger meet

Here's how I did:

  1. Fly in an airplane for the FIRST TIME! Done! Not a long, international flight, but I did fly to/from Durban in June/July for a conference
  2. Get my learner's license I finally got around to doing this. Now just to get my driver's license for the next list!
  3. Start a YouTube channel I still need to get the hang of filming properly and get into a regular schedule though
  4. Start yoga Started yoga in March and still going strong!
  5. Sleep under the stars. Fail.
  6. Attend a colour festival Went to the Cape Town Holi One/We Are One Festival in March! (The day after my 24th birthday!)
  7. Write a letter to my 30-year-old self. In progress...
  8. Take more photos of my daily life Sort of. Been doing this a lot more thanks to Instagram, but this I'll be taking it even further with PROJECT LIFE!
  9. Buy myself a proper piece of jewelry Bought myself a really pretty ring after my MSc graduation and have been wearing it daily ever since!
  10. Make some non-chemistry-related money. Made my first little bit of money through my blog. It wasn't much but it was exciting!
  11. Buy a pair of jeans that fit well. No such luck yet. (Petite ladies - any suggestions for jeans that fit short legs but accommodate curves as well?)
  12. Go 24 hours media free. Ok, absolutely epic fail
  13. Go up onto the roof Ok, this doesn't sound like much but I am terrified of falling and ladders (weirdly, it's not a fear of heights per se). It's taken me over 20 years to join my brother or father up on the roof of my parents' house (and it's only a 1-story!).I crawled up and down, and had a small panic attack whilst I was up there, and refused to stand up, but I did it! (Why were we up on the roof? Taking photos of the awesome snow-capped mountain ranges, that's what).
  14. Clear my wardrobe Got rid of several bags full of clothes that don't fit me any more. Donated to charity.
  15. Survive my first year of PhD life - only just ;) It's been a really tough year, but I'm glad I'm doing what I'm doing. Besides, how many people get to go into work and do cool things like THIS:
  17. Go to a big music concert I've been to a bunch of small, local concerts but never to a huge, international band because crowds tend to freak me out. This year, I went to BON JOVI with some friends and it was totally AWESOME!!!
  18. Cut my own hair When I had short hair, it required frequent trips to the hairdresser to keep it in shape. Now that my hair is just long layers, it's awesome to be able to save the money and just trim the ends/layers myself.
  19. Go watch a live comedy show. I was lucky enough to go watch two of my favourite stand-up comedians ever this year, Michael McIntyre and Eddie Izzard!
  20. Get business cards printed. Haven't had professional ones printed yet because I'm still tweaking my blog design, but I did have some temporary ones made for the meantime.
  21. Visit a new province See no.1 - visited KwaZulu Natal for the first time. (That makes 5: Western Cape, Northern Cape, Eastern Cape, KwaZulu Natal and Free State. Still need to venture up into the North-Eastern corner of the country!)
  22. Host a themed dinner party. Not yet. One for the next year!
  23. Go for a weekend away with my friends Spent a fabulous weekend away in the Riebeek Valley in May for the Olive Festival! We've also spent two weekends down the coast and stayed in Betty's Bay
  24. Start journaling again Oh, Typo Buffalo Journals, how I love you so!
  25. Go to a blogger meet. Done! You can read my post about the #CPTBloggerMeet HERE.
Overall, I'm rather pleased with how much I achieved in this year! I'm looking forward to next year - keep your eyes peeled for my 25 before 26 list!

NOTD - Raspberry Fields Forever

Catrice - Raspberry Fields Forever

Just a quick pre-cleanup shot of what's on my nails at the moment. I got this polish in my #CPTBloggerMeet goodie bag and it is beautiful. The deep raspberry colour perfectly dances the line between pink and red, and the finish is smooth and shiny. I'm wearing two coats with no top coat (living on the edge!).

[Closed] Essence Cosmetics

Ok, if you don't yet know that I LOVE Essence products, you must be new around here. Obviously, I love just about every nail polish that I've ever gotten my hands on (and between you and me, that's a lot of nail polish), but I also use Essence eyeshadows, lipglosses, BB cream, eyeliner, brow gel, matt powder, bronzer, and and and... The fact that their products are so unbelievably cheap affordable suits my budget perfectly, but it's a total bonus that they are just as good as many other pricier alternatives.

To celebrate my blog birthday, I've been given two very generous hampers to give away to 2 lucky Whimsy Is Forever readers!

The purple bag contains: Glow in the Night Top Coat // Express Nail Oil Pen // Express Nail Peeling Pen // Paper Print Manicure Sheets // Paper Print Manicure Transfer Solution // Pocket Nail File Set // 3D Nail Pearls // Sun Club All-In-One Bronzing Highlighter // Mini Lipgloss Trio // Kabuki Brush // Blush Stick in Miss Peachy // Eye Sorbet in Illuminating Raspberry // Stays No Matter What Eyepencil & Shadow in Chocolate Brownie

Birthday Wishes

So, in 10 days time aka the 1st of March, IT WILL BE MY BIRTHDAY! (Commence intense celebration, followed by brief weeping period when I realize I'm 25 and have no plan yet for my life, followed by acceptance and a smile.) Of course, birthdays mean birthday presents! Here are a few things that I'm hoping the magical birthday fairies bring me this year!

1. Lush Bath Bombs - One of my newer addictions, I don't think I could ever get over these! Some of the bath ballistics I'm currently craving are the Butterball, Twilight and Blackberry Bath Bombs
2. Red lips are my all-time favourite makeup looks (even if I'm just vegging at home in my pjs!) so I'm always on the lookout for new formulations. Two red lip products currently on my wishlist are the Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick in Fiery, and MAC Lipstick in Russian Red.
3. I'm still loving my longer hair, but the tangles that it loves getting into are giving me grief. Maybe a Tangle Teezer is the solution?
4. Face masks are always a great gift idea for anyone who loves a bit of pampering.
5. Somedays it feels like I'm the only person left in the world who hasn't tried Urban Decay products! I love me some neutral eyeshadows, so I'm lusting over all three Naked palettes. (Ok, realistically, unless the universe really does conjure up some magical birthday fairies, this one may have to be a from-me-to-me gift...)

6. I love love LOVE cute socks, and after seeing these frilly ankle socks in Cotton On I now want ALL of them!
7. A slightly practical item on my birthday wishlist is a new, more powerful hairdryer. At the moment I'm using a compact dryer and - while it's been perfectly lovely for the last few years - it's just not quite cutting it anymore now that I have longer hair.
8. Who else loves pretty scarves? I do, but I never seem to buy them for myself. How pretty is this one from Forever New?
9. We've recently covered my new love for scented candles. Two Yankee Candles on my wishlist are Soft Blanket and Garden Sweet Pea.
10. Last but not least, Typo goodies! I'm particularly a fan for their nerdier products, such as this pencil bag and stamp kit. (I already have and love the periodic table canvas!)

[Closed] Original Cocktails Giveaway

The lovely team at Original Cocktails recently sent me some of their amazing cocktails to try for myself. Now, if you haven't yet heard of Original Cocktails, they're the makers of some ingenious products - pre-made cocktails! Perfect for parties, sundowners, lazy evenings, you name it! I was given two varieties to try, the Cosmopolitan and the Mojito (both cocktails that I LOVE!).

I enjoyed both of these cocktails immensely! The Cosmopolitan mix had a good balance of the tartness of cranberry with the zest of citrus. (Also, no-one say anything, but my brother also totally enjoyed his glass of cosmo!)(I served it to him in a whiskey tumbler, so it was totally manly.) The Mojito mix was pleasantly minty, with a nice lime finish. Both the Cosmo and Mojitos had just enough of a "kick" without overpowering the flavour. (Ever had one of those cocktails where all you can taste is the alcohol? Awful.) Both mixes are great "as is", but for a little something extra, can be enjoyed with a bit of a twist. For example, I added some lime slices and mint leaves to some of the Mojitos for some extra pizazz - no need to leave home for first-class cocktails! You can bet that I'm going to be picking up some more boxes of these in the immediate future - they're great to keep in the fridge for a lazy & convenient end-of-day cocktail. I also think that this is the perfect ingredient to a party - no need for someone to be stuck making cocktails when they can be available on tap!

Now for the fun bit: I've also been given a party pack to give away to a lucky Whimsy Is Forever reader! This pack includes six individual cocktail sachets: Cosmopolitan, Mojito, Margarita, Singapore Sling, Pina Colada and Strawberry Daquiri! How great does that sound?

This giveaway is open to South African residents over the age of 18.

[Closed] Airwick Colour Changing Candles

Recently, I've really gotten into scented candles. I've always loved the soft glow of candlelight, but it's only in the last year or so that I started switching my unscented candles for their scented counterparts. There's just something about the gentle scent of a candle wafting through the house to round off the effect. I always find it fascinating how strongly scents and aromas can evoke feelings, or bring back memories. Of course, I have a strong fondness for food, so it should come as no surprise that my favourite scents include vanilla, cocoa and cinnamon!

Now, while I have been aware of (and used) Airwick products for years and years, I only recently was made aware of their range of scented candles, available in some nice fragrances. I was particularly drawn to the MultiColour Candles. The original candles are in a frosted white glass, in three scents (Rich Vanilla & Caramel Swirl; Cocoa Truffle & Créme; Precious Silk & Oriental Orchids).

Now, when you look at these candles, they look deceptively simple. But hidden within them is a secret, which emerges when the candle is lit...

How cool is that?! I love how these candles will look pretty and elegant sitting around your house, and then change into a pretty light show when lit, all while gently giving off their delicate scent.

This brings me to this week's Blog Birthday Giveaway! I will be giving the above two candles (One "Rich Vanilla & Caramel Swirl", one "Cocoa Truffle & Créme") away to two readers.

This giveaway is open to South African residents. To enter, please use the widget below. The only compulsory entry is to leave a comment on the post. Whimsy Is Forever Turns Two!

This month, my little blog is turning 2! To celebrate my blog's birthday (blogiversary?) I'll be hosting several giveaways, so be sure to pop by regularly!

I want to take this moment to thank each and every one of my readers - without your support, I would have given up blogging ages ago. Instead, a late-night whim became an enjoyable hobby, which became part of my daily life. I have made so many lovely friends through blogging, I have grown immensely as a person, and I look forward with much excitement to what the future holds!
