Essence My Skin Refreshing Cleansing Wipes

I'll admit it - at least one a week, I get into bed without taking my makeup off. *shock horror* Sometimes it's because I've only gotten home from work in the early hours of the morning, sometimes several botttles of wine are involved. Whatever the reason, once I've collapsed exhausted onto my bed, there's no way in hell I'm getting up to walk to the bathroom to wash my face. Which is why I keep a pack of cleansing wipes next to my bed.

At R19.95 for a pack of 25, Essence's Refreshing cleansing wipes are ridiculously cheap. (The wipes I was previously using were around R55 for 25.) These wipes are alcohol free and claim to be suitable for all skin types.

The lime and cucumber scent took me a bit of getting used to and, while I wasn't a fan at first, it's now grown on me (although I still would prefer fragrance-free). The wipes themselves are very soft to the touch and are thick enough to work efficiently. They are just wet enough to clean your face properly (and take off all your makeup).

Personally, while I found that these wipes did clean my skin, I found that they were quite drying. I have to moisturize after using these otherwise my skin feels uncomfortably dry and tight. (Which, when you're using a product as a lazy/tired shortcut, is not great.)

Overall, I would recommend that you give these wipes a try if you have oily or combination skin, but if you have skin that is sensitive or dry, be prepared to have to moisturize afterwards.

My Clicks was sold out of Essence's other My Skin cleansing wipes (the "Caring" cleansing wipes) so I'm hoping to get my hands on those when this pack runs out - I think those might be less drying/more moisturizing.

Naughty And Pink

essence - naughty and pink!

I've had this polish for almost a year and somehow it's never made it's way onto the blog! *shock, horror!* In any case, "naughty and pink!" is a perfect bright, bold, hot pink. The polish applies easily but is just a tad too sheer, so this one's a three-coater. But, by golly, just look how pretty and shiny it is!

[serious] On this weekend

I don’t normally talk about the really serious stuff on this blog – mostly because I like this space to be a whimsical, care-free place for me to escape. But today I found these words coming out instead, and felt that I would share them.

This Saturday, I was having a lazy afternoon, just laying around in my apartment and watching a series marathon. Until the phone rang. A lady from ADT Security told me that there had been a break in at my parents’ home, and that she was phoning me since they had been unable to contact my parents. My heart sank. It was 15h23 on a Saturday, which meant that both my parents and my brother should have been at home. I imagined every worst possible scenario. In fact, it took me a full half an hour to realise that the alarm had gone off, which meant it had been turned on, so no-one was at home. I managed to get my mom on the phone to tell her what had happened and we all rushed back home (my family from their impromptu shopping trip and me from Stellenbosch) to assess the damage.

Today, I’m very thankful that no one was home and no one got hurt. I’m so grateful that my brother decided to go to the shops with my parents instead of staying home like he usually does. Because when a crew of criminals is prepared to smash through your security gate and break open your front door just to get your television and other electronics, who knows what they would do to anyone that happened to be in their way?
Frustratingly, this all happened 5 months ago. Exactly the same way. Almost certainly the same crew. The bastards have even been caught on someone’s security camera and the photo placed in the local newspaper. And the police are entirely and utterly useless.

I don’t think any of us slept well that night. We alternated between anger – that people could invade our privacy so violently – and paranoia. I was grateful for every message of support that came from my friends, both IRL and on twitter. We didn't even give a second thought for the fact that so many of our things were gone – they were, after all, just things. Items that could be replaced. But it’s difficult to shake that feeling that comes with your home, your sanctuary, being invaded. Of having strangers rip through your personal belongings. Of walking into your bedroom and seeing your possessions carelessly strewn across the floor, broken or trampled on. Of having to get a carpenter to barricade your front door shut for the weekend until a new one could be made and fitted.

Most of all, my heart goes out to all those families who were not as lucky as we were.

Let's Get Personal Tag

Today's post is picking up on the "Let's Get Personal" tag from Luzanne of Pink Peonies (if you don't read her blog yet, go check it out - beautiful!).

Without any more preamble, let's get to it! (Warning: randomness and cheese-obsessing ahead!)

Do you have any pets?
Technically no (my apartment block doesn’t allow pets) but I still call my parent’s dog “mine” J

Seriously, how cute is this little one?!

Name 3 things that are physically close to you.
My phone, my water filter bottle and a giant heap of journal articles that need reading

What’s the weather like right now?
It’s still rather chilly but the sun is coming out, yay!

Do you drive?
Nope, not yet.

What time did you wake up this morning?
I was awake just before 6am. Took me a while to convince myself to leave the warm bed though.

When was the last time you showered?
This morning

What was the last movie you saw?
At the movies, it would be Despicable Me 2 (the minions!!!) about a month ago.

Bee do! Bee do! Bee do!

What does your last text message say?
“Excellent! As for the G and T’s that’s a given.” (Part of a whatsapp convo making dinner plans with my girlfriends)

What’s your ringtone?
One of the default Samsung ringtones (the one that sounds like an old school phone ringing)

Have you ever been to a different country?
So far just Namibia.

Do you like sushi?
Nope. I’ll eat it, but I don’t like fish. Or rice, really.

Where do you buy your groceries?
Woolworths (meat/produce/dairy) or Pick n Pay (non perishables etc)

Have you ever taken medication to help you fall asleep faster?
Nope. Wait - does wine count?

How many siblings do you have?
One – my brother (3 years younger than me)

This guy!

Do you have a desktop computer, laptop or an iPad / Tablet?
Personal desktop computer, work laptop, personal laptop and iPad (thank goodness for Dropbox/Google Drive and being able to sync Google Chrome!)

How old will you be turning on your next birthday?
25 – eek!

Do you wear contacts or glasses?
Both. I usually wear my contacts but if I’m being lazy or want to give my eyes a break I switch to my glasses. I literally can't see my hand in front of my face clearly without optical enhancement.

Do you colour your hair?
I used to, since I was 16 . I’m now giving my hair a break after 3 years of highlights by growing out the blonde to get an ombre effect :) (Blog post on a hair update & changes coming soon!)

Tell me something you are planning to do today.
Set up a reaction in the lab, try figure out what on earth is going on in my newest crystal structure, meet up with my PhD supervisors to discuss progress, followed by a lazy Friday night at home.

Yeah! Science!

What is your perfect pizza topping?
I don’t really have a favourite, I just love pizza! But if it’s got either pepperoni or bacon or avo or Camembert I’ll be drawn to it.

Which do you prefer – hamburgers or cheeseburgers?
Hamburgers. Cheeseburgers normally have that really crappy fake cheese. Urg.

Have you ever had an all-nighter?
No, I typically crash after 4am.

When was the last time you cried?
Um… Wednesday. I was tired and frustrated with work and just one too many things had gone wrong.

What is your eye color?
Blue - grey

Can you taste the difference between Pepsi and Coke?
If I’m concentrating.

What do you order at Starbucks?
Never been to Starbucks (not open in RSA) but I’m not really drawn to anything on their menu that people rave about. Give me my Hazz latte every day!

Lu's got skills. Plus, this is the best tasting coffee I have EVER had!

What’s one thing in your closet that you cannot live without?
My Woolies jeggings.

What’s one thing that most people probably wouldn’t know about you?
Um, I dunno... I can lick my elbow. People are normally surprised by that.

Name one thing that you want to do before you die.
Travel through Western Europe

What’s one food that you cannot live without?
Cheese. (Actual proper cheeses though, not that processed yellow crap). (Starting to sense a theme of cheese addiction/snobbery here. I apologize.)

God, I love me a cheese and wine evening!

What quote / phrase do you live your life by?

What’s your number one most listened to song right now?
Currently listening to “Beat the Devil’s Tattoo” by Black Rebel Motorcycle Club way too much.

What kind of style would you define yourself as having?
Depends on my mood. I normally go for classic, modern, minimalistic or preppy as my fav looks.

What is your favourite number?
1, 3 and 9.

Name two hobbies.
This comes to mind...
More socially acceptable hobbies include photography and writing short stories.

Name two pet peeves.
People who can’t follow logical instructions/listen to reason.
Shop assistants. Can’t we just all live in a world where they don’t exist?

What is your guilty pleasure?
I don’t have guilty pleasures. Why feel guilty? I’ll spend my evening eating a bowl of cookie dough with a bottle of red wine and shitty chic-lit if I want to. And be perfectly content.

Sjoe, that's quite a lot of random nonsense from me! I hope that you enjoyed reading this post!

NOTD - Absolutely Blue

essence - absolutely blue

This polish has the same essence formula that I've come to love - thick, opaque, easy to apply. Colour-wise, this is a perfect pastel periwinkle blue, carefully dancing the line between blue and purple.

Blue Monday

Sometimes, all you need is a few polka dots...

Base colour is Tip Top's "Beach Babe:, polka dots are using "the boy next door" by essence.

Video! My Clicks Beauty Haul

So I finally got around to filming my first video! Forgive how my hair just looks weird because it was air-drying and how the video is a bit grainy because I'm filming with my phone, or how I start almost every sentence with "So...". ;)

Let me know in the comments section if (a) you have tried/want to try any of the products shown in the clip and (b) if you would be interested in seeing more videos in the future! Also, be sure to pop over to YouTube itself to subscribe to my channel and give my video a thumbs up :)
