Getting a little bit personal...

I saw this post on Tails of A Mermaid and thought it would make an interesting blog post to share :) There's a lot of text here, but it shouldn't take long to read, I promise! ;)

1. List 5 random facts about yourself
-I write short stories in my spare time.
-I mirror-write.
-I play with my hair. A lot. This is why I usually put it up.
-I'm an introvert - hanging out with strangers/lots of people exhausts me.
-I'm just over 5 ft 1 tall. Which isn't much apparently.

2. Describe 3 legitimate fears you have.
-Snails/slugs. I'm absolutely petrified. I will walk a complete detour to avoid having to step over them. It's bizarre but they really freak me out.
-Seaweed. Whether it's in the sea or on the beach, it completely freaks me out, and if it gets near - or god forbid, touches me - I will shriek like a girl in a horror movie about to get chainsawed.
-Being alone forever. Because even crazy, eccentric introverts need love, you know?

3. List 5 things you would tell your 16 year-old self, if you could.
-Everyone that you know right now? They're not going to be part of your life after high school. Stop caring what they think - just be yourself.
-Don't worry: your godawful acne WILL clear up!
-Enjoy eating junk food without putting on weight! You don't appreciate this nearly enough. Damn metabolism...
-Seriously, enough with the awful jeans, crew-neck tshirts and takkies - you'll feel a lot better about yourself if you actually wore clothes that suited you. And do something with that terrible hair!
-That voice at the back of your mind telling you to write more? Listen to it.

4. What are the 5 things that make you most happy right now?
-hanging out with my friends
-good food
-great wine
-rainy days
-chemistry magic

5. If you could have three wishes, what would you wish for?
-Funding (I haven't yet gotten paid this year and I'll only find out in April/May if I'll have funding/how much funding I'll have. It's getting tough - my savings account is running close to empty.)
-Perfect eyesight (I'm blind as anything without my glasses or contact lenses and it's a total bitch.)
-A new mattress that will magically make my lower back pain disappear.

6. What is your dream job, and why?
Can we save this question for Future Laura? Because right now, I have no idea what I want to do with my life.

7. What are 5 passions you have?

8. Describe your most embarrassing moment.
I can't even. It's mortifying. I'm not even going to think too long about. Onward to the next one...

9. Describe 10 pet peeves you have.
-People who can't follow logical instructions.
-Shop assistants that ask if they can help me. One, I'm an introvert - I hate talking to people unless I have to/want to. Two, I'm a grown woman - If I want help, I'll freaking ask for it.
-People who don't know how to use INSIDE VOICES.
-Cup cakes that are too big to actually bite. If I need to get a fork to eat that thing, it's not a cupcake. It's an overly frosted normal cake.
-When people come over to talk to you about meaningless crap when you have your "I'm busy and I don't want to talk to you" earphones in
-Movies/books that are 'based on a true story'. Urg. Can't stand them. Because you know it's going to be filled with soppy, sentimental shit. Give me an epic fantasy book or a superhero movie any day.
-People who dawdle in shopping malls. And insist on walking five people abreast so you can't get past them. Or on sidewalks. Or anywhere in my way.
-People who still assume that because I have boobs and paint my nails I can't possibly be doing a PhD in science, or conceivably be pretty kickass at chemistry. Tell me once more how men are better at science than women and be prepared to hear a fairly long, rant-y lecture detailing how incredibly idiotic you are.
-Doing the dishes. Really don't like having to do this. Cooking and making everything a mess, that's much more up my alley...
-When you find that perfect top/dress/shoe and... they don't have your size. Urg.

10. Describe a typical day in your current life.
Wake up, check my email/twitter/other social networks on my phone, get up, shower and wash hair, get dressed, do my makeup/hair, make breakfast and lunch, go to work, check my blog roll, get the day's admin done, head into the lab, have a coffee break, eat breakfast, do whatever work needs to be done, have lunch, do what should have been done in the morning but I was procrastinating so I haven't done it yet, head home, watch an episode or two of series, make supper, read my book, check my blog roll, go to sleep. Wash rinse repeat.

11. What’s the hardest part of growing up?
Having to make tough decisions.

12. Describe 5 and weaknesses & strengths you have.

13. What are your 5 greatest accomplishments?
Where I am right now in my life is my greatest accomplishment. Every small step has led to the me that is right now.

14. What is the thing you most wish you were great at?
Singing. I love to sing but I'm not very good. Except in the shower, of course ;)

15. Where do you see yourself in 5 years? 10 years? 15 years?
Oh god. This is something that freaks me out totally and it's something I get asked all.the.time. "What are you planning on doing after you finish your PhD?" I HAVE NO IDEA. It's almost like there are too many options and I have no way of knowing what is the right path for me to follow. I'm going to have to figure it out as I go along.

16. What’s your favorite holiday and why?
The roadtrips I did with my friends to J-Bay at the end of every year during my earlier varsity years :) Such great memories.

17. If you could have dinner with anyone in history, who would it be?
Ooh, that's a tough one. Would it be cheating to say everyone in this photo? The scientific debate must have been utterly fascinating.

18. What popular notion do you think the world has most wrong?
That the word "chemical" equals "bad/toxic/unhealthy/evil". This sort of chemophobia drives me absolutely crazy. Yes, some chemicals are bad. Others are beneficial, and some just sit around and do nothing.
Also, unless you are talking about a perfect vacuum, there is NO SUCH THING as "chemical free"! A
nother common misconception I see in the beauty industry is that something that contains lots of chemical ingredients is worse for you than something with fewer. Guess what? A single plant extract (which is listed just as is) can contain thousands of chemicals - plants are wonderfully complex.

19. What is your favorite part of your body and why?
Can I say my boobs? Because they're pretty awesome.

20. List 10 things you would hope to be remembered for.
Oh lord, I have no idea...

  1. Yes. I am very nosy. He-he! Great post! Loved learning more about the girl behind the blog xx

  2. Great post! I can identify completely with "Shop assistants that ask if they can help me" and "People who dawdle in shopping malls". I'm also an introvert like you and having to talk to people is not my favourite thing. I talk fast and walk fast so I normally speed through the mall ;)

  3. Really loved this! I was saying "Me too!" for a lot of these :)

  4. Great post! I may have to borrow this one. I can relate to a lot of these facts, it looks like we have a lot in common. I freak out if sea weed gets near me in the sea, and if it touches me I will scream, too. Not sure why that is. I'm an introvert, too, and I hate being approached by people, but also worry about being alone forever. And people who dawdle in shopping centres really test my patience. Oh, and as for lower back pain... have you tried a memory foam mattress, or mattress topper? They might make sleep more comfortable for you :)

    1. You should totally borrow this for your blog, I'd love to see all your answers :)
I'm busy saving up for a memory foam mattress - I think it's going to be the first big purchase I do once I (eventually) get paid!

  5. Loved reading and learning more about you:-)

  6. Awesum post, u go laura just love it and who u r:)
