What I Wore: Post-Defense Adventures

On Friday morning, I did my thesis defense. For those not in the system, this involved standing up in front of the staff and students of the Department of Chemistry and presenting the research that I did for my degree. They then get an opportunity to ask you anything they desire, and give you a mark for your presentation, including how well you answered their questions. The mark for this presentation gets added to the mark for my thesis, which gives the mark for my degree. (I did a pure-research Masters, no classes or theoretical modules).

In any case, it's a pretty big deal, which - obviously - means that I had to find the perfect outfit. Me being silly, I was too nervous that morning to remember to shoot some outfit photos, so I snapped this one at work before the presentation. I think this teal polka-dot peplum dress is going to become one of my new go-to dresses in my wardrobe - I love it so much! I added simple black heels (just high enough to make my butt look good, but not too high to add falling-on-my-face to my presentation). I added simple accessories, including an owl necklace as owls are a symbol of wisdom.

Afterwards, my awesome friends took me for a much-needed drink or few! We spent the afternoon in Camps Bay, where we enjoyed numerous cocktails (plus some much-needed food) at Cafe Caprice. We then went for a walk on the beach (despite the fearful wind that absolutely sand-blasted us), since I hadn't actually had my toes in the sand since BEFORE I started my MSc! (That's over 2 years! And yes, I live a stone's throw away from the sea. Scandalous.)  We finished off the day in style, by enjoying a bottle of chardonnay in the Waterfront. By that point, the whole day had completely exhausted my, so we headed home for some much-needed sleep!

Here are a few photos I took (forgive how wind-swept our hair looks!).

NOTD: Season of Love

Ok, so yes, I think Valentine's Day is a bullshit commercial holiday, but that doesn't mean that I'm not immune to the constant indoctrination of pink and hearts. And because I'm a girly girl at heart, this week I'm sporting a Valentine's inspired manicure.

I used three polishes for this nail-art look: two shades of pink and a white. The light pink is Tip Top Nail Chic in Sherbet Angel, the darker pink is Tip Top Nail Chic in Pot-O-Berries and the white is Rimmel's Nail Tip Whitener.

After base coat, I applied two thin coats of Sherbet Angel. Once this was dry, I used tap to diagonally section off part of the nail. The exposed sections were then painted with a coat of Pot-O-Berries and the tape removed while the polish was still wet.

Once the pink background was dry, I added the white details. I used a toothpick as a dotting tool to add the dots along the diagonal (this also hid any imperfections in the boundary line). I also used the toothpick to draw the outline of the heart and subsequently fill it in. Once the white had had sufficient time to dry, I added top coat.

The base coat I am currently using is Tip Top's Toughen Up base coat; and I'm using Revlon's Color Stay Gold Standard Top Coat.

I'm Back! (And I want to say something real.)

Yes, I know, I've been AWOL from the blogging world for a month. That's a long time. It was a conscious decision to take a break and focus on my personal and professional life, something that was drastically needed. Prior to that point, I was barely getting enough sleep in a week to put together a single night's sleep. My every waking moment was spent in a haze of sleep deprivation, stress, panic, self-loathing and depression. I desperately needed some me-time to think and regroup. It's time for me to stop bottling up everything I feel, to stop trying to do everything by myself, to stop feeling like a failure when I can't do the impossible, to stop hiding behind a forced smile and a mask. It's time to start letting people in, to start accepting help, to start acknowledging the things that I have achieved, to start to show the real me. To realize that, yes, I'm not always going to be a shiny, happy person, but that's ok.
It's time to really start living 2013. It's going to be a fantastic year.

Jamie O'Neal - All By Myself

One moment of self-indulgent self-pity for the sad state of my life, then I'm picking myself up and carrying on with my life.

Or I could just listen to this on repeat with a glass of wine and sing along Bridget Jones style...
