Back to Basics: Black Tank Top

For today’s post, I’m going to focus on the plain black tank top. It’s a staple in most girls’ closets, but often we just tend to think of “jeans and a tank top” as being a go-to no-style combo. Here, I’ve styled our everyday favourite in a few ways to show you some of the versatility you can get with just a few accessories.

Outfit 1: Campus Time

This first outfit is ideal for going to class and walking around campus. Our basic black tank top is paired on on-trend flared blue jeans; a combination that is both comfortable and practical. A pop of colour is introduced with these gorgeous bright blue ballet pumps (which are comfortable enough for you to walk around campus, or run to your next class!). The blue is picked up again in a few bangles to add some personalized flair. Oversized black sunglasses will protect your eyes in between classes, and a large leather messanger bag will be big enough to hold all your notes and books. (Top tip: it’s worth investing in a good bag for class, but try to get one in a neutral brown or black to ensure that it matches most of your outfits). Finally, a matching blue cardigan is just the perfect cover-up should the wind pick up!

Outfit 2: Shopping with the girls

Colourblocking is a huge trend at the moment, but I’m still a bit colour-shy, so I don’t think I’m going to be buying any “colourblocked” items. Instead, subtly introduce the trend by complimenting a bright cobalt skirt with a sunflower-yellow bag, with your black tank top to keep things in the balance. Keep the rest of your outfit simple by sticking to some black jewelry (choose small studs and a eye-catching cocktail ring, which won’t interfere with all the clothing-fitting associated with shopping!). Black wedges are both on trend, and offer height without sacrificing on comfort.

Outfit 3: Sunday lunch with the family

If you’re going to be spending some time with your family, or going to church, you’re going to want to look polished and respectable. Create a sleek silhouette with some tailored black slacks and your tank top. Some simple neutral heels add elegance. Accessorise with a beautiful silk scarf, and matching nail polish. Finish the look off with some pretty pearl jewellery.

Outfit 4: Night out on the town

Okay, so here I cheated a little, as this isn’t the same tank top as in the previous 3 outfits, but I’m a firm believer that everyone should have a sequinned top in their wardrobe! By teaming this sparkly black tank top with some well-fitting black skinny jeans, you effortlessly look ready to go out. Take things to the next level with some sky-high black pumps (take advantage of the platform trend and sneakily gain some height). Some silver and diamante jewellery, and a silver clutch purse, round things off to make you stand out from the crowd!
